  • March 2nd 10:00am - Prince Memorial Library Introduction to Food Forest Design - A food forest is a way of laying out a landscape to mimic a natural forest, providing food and other human needs with a minimum amount of external inputs and maximum benefits to wildlife and the greater environment. This workshop will introduce the concepts of ecological niches, analogs, and resource partitioning so you can design your own home-scale food forest. To help you implement your design we will also cover best practices for starting a food forest and recommended species to plant. Free and open to the public. The library is at 266 Main St, Cumberland, ME

  • March 9th 1:00pm - Renovating old fruit trees at Boyd St. Community Garden - While the principals of pruning older/ overgrown fruit trees are similar to young trees, there are some details and techniques that are especially suited to old trees. We will be helping out our friends at Boyd St. Community Garden get some large fruit trees back into shape and you are invited to come learn and help. Please dress for the weather and bring any pruning tools you have with you. Free and open to the public. The garden is at 2 Boyd St., Portland, ME.

  • March 16th 1:00pm - Prince Memorial Library Grafting Apple and Pear Trees (A Hands on Workshop) Join us for a session learning about bench grafting apple and pear trees! We’ll be giving an introduction to grafting skills, and you’ll have the opportunity to try your hand at grafting, too. The apple and pears trees grafted during this workshop will be destined for the Cumberland Community Nursery in 2025 after sizing up for a year in nursery beds. Free and open to the public. The library is at 266 Main St, Cumberland, ME

  • March 23rd 1:00pm - Mt. Joy Orchard Pruning round 2. We had a great pruning workshop on Feb 24th, but we didn't quite get the job finished. So we will have a second session. We'll have a optional pruning workshop for folks who aren't familiar with pruning. Please dress for the weather and bring any pruning tools you have with you. Free and open to the public. The Orchard is at 181 Washington Ave, Portland, ME.

  • March 24, 12 - 4 p.m. - MOFGA Seed and Scion Exchange - Unity, ME -  I'll be teaching Seed Saving for Home Gardeners (in the Library) from 12:30-1:15 p.m. and Propagating Woody Plants Without Grafting from 2:30-3:15 p.m. One of my favorite perennial events! If you have seeds/scions to share, bring ‘em, but even if you don’t, all items are freely shared at this swap. click HERE for full schedule / info.

  • April 28 1:00pm - Living Soils and Water-Wise Gardening We will be walking around Cumberland's Community Orchard site in preparation for our first planting of trees on May 5t. We will learn about the soil food web, how to care for our soils, and what we can do to manage our gardens (and orchard) for better water retention. For those who would like to help out, the educational presentation will be followed by a few hours of prep work to get all our tree planting sites ready. The orchard is on Stiles Way, Cumberland, ME
